Counselling and Psychotherapy from the heart of Cranbrook

''In times of doubt and confusion, think of the Phoenix.  It symbolizes strength, transformation and renewal. For only from the ashes of who we were, can we rise up to become who we truly wish to be.”

Welcome to my Practice.

Hello, my name is Ash.  I am a qualified integrative counsellor, which means the kind of therapy I offer draws from a variety of different theoretical approaches.  Every therapeutic relationship is unique, and your preferences to how we work are key.

My aim is to offer you an opportunity to explore what you need in a safe and contained space, without judgement.  However, I am not a ‘nodding dog’ or ‘blank screen’ type of therapist.  I will work hard alongside you, to be an active partner in this process.  Therapy done well can be life changing, and lifesaving, but it’s not always easy.  Key to its success is the relationship we create.

Seeking support is tough, and I have a particular interest in supporting those who feel most intimidated by the process or are perhaps only reaching out for the first time.  I understand that barriers to therapy can be deeply ingrained with culture, gender, family and life experiences all playing their part, but these can be overcome.

My approach will be tailored to your aims, but I recognise that there are many different ways to support healing and change.  Whilst counselling and psychotherapy are often labelled as ‘talk therapies’, talking is not always the only way, and contrary to popular belief, you are never obliged to ‘tell all’.

My philosophy aligns with the trauma informed approaches, believing that ‘what happened to you’ matters and recognising the importance of neuroscientific developments in the therapy field and the specific considerations required to support healing from trauma.

 Things I Can Help With

I work with adults of all ages on a one to one basis.  As I utilise a wide range of approaches, I am interested in supporting people with a diverse range of needs, so frankly no presenting issue is off limits.  You may have a clear reason or motivation, but it is not necessary to know exactly what you want or need to get started.  Perhaps you want to address problem drinking, historic abuse, ongoing depression? Perhaps you want to understand more about a mental health diagnosis or need support due to ill health or problems at work?  I do not offer a definitive list, but below are some key areas our work might fall into.

Mental Health

Anxiety, depression and mental health in general might be more spoken about these days, but the impact can be hard to navigate alone.  Increasingly there is overlap with neurodivergence and other complex diagnoses.  However, diagnosis alone doesn't always help, just as recognising we are burnt out or overwhelmed doesn't simply stop us struggling.

The approach I offer will be individual. This may include cognitive and behavioural interventions that can support you with functioning, along with longer term psychodynamic and existential approaches.   We will start with recognising just where you are, and understanding the challenges you are facing, free from judgement or expectation.

Trauma

Trauma can result form a complex array of circumstances and events, and result in lasting difficulties and debilitating symptoms.  Sometimes, there is a clear event, but for others, trauma can build up through a series of events or through vicarious exposure.  Sometimes events in the present can reawaken memories from the past.

Whatever the cause it is important to recognise the links between body and mind, and the need to return both to a state of regulation and safety.

I can support you with this process of managing symptoms and regaining safety,  from where we can understand more about what has happened, aligning with somatic and neuroscientific trauma informed approaches.

Relationships

How we relate is extremely important to how we survive and thrive.  Difficulties with our relationships directly impacts our mental and emotional wellbeing.  Perhaps you are struggling to connect romantically, or have problems in work, or with your wider family and community.

I believe that our earliest relationships are generally key to how we operate as adults.  Here, understanding the past and its impact on the present can be very useful.

Therapy works primarily through the connection and relationship we create.  This allows us to explore not just the issues you are facing outside the room, but perhaps the deeper relational patterns and needs that present through our work.

Identity and Meaning

Understanding who we, and what we are seeking in life matters.  Changes in circumstances, loss and trauma can all bring with them questions around identity and meaning, and it can be difficult to explore without support. Sometimes discomfort and challenge around identity is life long.  I recognise identity is multifaceted and complex, race, gender, sexuality, profession, parenthood or neurodivergence are just a few of the aspects that may collide to make us who we are.  Perhaps you face adversity or difficulty due to some aspects about yourself, or worry that parts of your identity don't fit.  I have an interest in working with difference and diversity, and provide space to explore without judgement.

Support for the Front Line

Working for the emergency services, military and in front line medical services brings unique challenges.  Exposure to trauma can be extreme, prolonged, and ongoing.  Culture and identity can be complex, and it can be hard to ask for help.  I have a background that supports an understanding of these issues, and can offer support that appreciates the impact of working in these extreme and challenging environments.
